Homemade Lava Lamp

This groovy science experiment will mesmerize your kids! Use different color food coloring to make different types of lava lamps.

Items Needed:

  • Recycle water bottle
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Alka Seltzer tablets

Directions:

Fill a recycled water bottle with ¾ cup water and the rest of the way with vegetable oil. Add about 10 drops of food coloring.  Add ½ of an Alka Seltzer tablet and watch the lava lamp appear. Originally the oil sits on top of the water because it is less dense. When the tablet is added, it creates gas and the gas bubbles rise taking the colored water with them.
